Professor Ali Noorani is a leading consultant orthopaedic and trauma surgeon who specialises in shoulder and elbow surgery. He is a particular authority on sports injuries and trauma, has treated many elite sportspeople, including Premier League footballers, and a number of professional cyclists, boxers and mixed martial arts Ultimate Fighting Championship competitors. His international standing in dealing with complex sports injuries and complex trauma mean that orthopaedic colleagues regularly refer these cases to him. He was the UK team doctor for the American National Basketball Association (NBA) and orthopaedic doctor for the American National Football League (NFL) and the Rugby World Cup (2015). He is also a trusted name in the movie industry and regularly treats A-list actors. With an international practice based in London, UAE and Pakistan, Professor Noorani’s priority is always to deliver an accurate diagnosis in a clear and compassionate way, and, despite his already world-renowned expertise, he is dedicated to further research and ongoing development in his field.

About Professor Noorani

Qualifying from the Imperial College School of Medicine (London) in 2000, Professor Noorani completed his orthopaedic and trauma training on the prestigious Royal London Hospital rotation together with 16 months’ training at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore with the Shoulder and Elbow Service and the Peripheral Nerve Injury Unit. He undertook further specialist fellowship training in shoulder, elbow and upper limb surgery at the globally renowned Upper Limb fellowship programme at The Royal Liverpool Hospital. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS Trauma & Orth) in 2009.

Professor Noorani works at St Bartholomew’s and The Royal London Hospital, a tertiary referral centre for complex upper limb patients and the biggest trauma centre in Europe. He is Medical Director and Chairman for Orthopaedic Specialists and President and Chairman for The Harley Street Specialist Hospital.

He is also a shoulder surgeon at the London Institute for Sports Exercise and Health (ISEH), the UK’s only International Olympic Committee (IOC) recognised centre. He is also the upper limb lead for the Sports Injury Clinic at OS clinic; a shoulder, elbow  and upper limb surgeon at the BMI London Independent Hospital, The Wellington Hospital, The Princess Grace Hospital and The London Clinic.

Professor Noorani sees a multidisciplinary approach as the best way to treat patients upper limb problems. Well-known for adopting a holistic, patient-centric approach, only 20% of his patients will actually go on to have surgery. Working together with a team of physiotherapists, he takes a meticulous approach to patient rehabilitation and, when surgery is required, he uses his expertise in minimally invasive techniques to get his patients back to normal as soon as possible. He strongly believes that accurate diagnosis is crucial, but explanation is essential too. Patients and also therapists, dealing with shoulder, elbow, hand and wrist symptoms value the reassurance and explanations, Professor Noorani unfailingly provides.

An expert in setting up multi-disciplinary teams and one-stop clinics in several different areas in the NHS and private healthcare arena, he has adopted LEAN methodology to streamline the patient journey in the upper limb service and has introduced several innovative pathways, including a one-stop clinic where patient assessment, radiological investigations, pre-admission, and scheduling can all be done within 24 hours.  He has been at the forefront of telemedicine and developed techniques which are now used worldwide. Patients can be diagnosed in Dubai, for instance, and the results can be studied in London using cloud-based systems.

He is the founding member of the Royal London Orthopaedic and Trauma Society and the Barts Orthopaedic Fund and on the education board of the European Society for Shoulder and Elbow Rehabilitation (EUSSER). He is also an active member of both the British Shoulder and Elbow Society and the British Orthopaedic Association; a member of the British Medical Association and a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons. He is a co-founder of REE Health and Trauma SOS, a concierge company which looks after the healthcare and logistics for patients with orthopaedics and trauma.

He is a recognised educator and clinical supervisor, has been frequently published in peer-reviewed journals and carried out research in several areas including instability. He is on the review board for the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery and has been a principal investigator on several multicentre randomised controlled trials.

He won the coveted Annual British Shoulder and Elbow Society Fellowship in 2010 and the British Orthopaedic Association Fellowship in 2011. He used these fellowships to gain further valuable insight into upper limb and trauma surgery including training widely in the US including at Harvard University, the Mayo Clinic, Columbia University, and the Rothman Institute. He was also awarded an AO trauma fellowship to Salzburg.

Above all, Professor Noorani is a vastly experienced surgeon in whom countless patients have placed their trust, knowing that he not only specialises in their condition as a patient, but also understands its impact on them as a human being.
