Joint replacement surgery is a life-enhancing procedure that entails removing a damaged joint (or part of the joint, if only one section is damaged) and replacing it with an artificial implant, called a prosthesis. This helps to restore mobility and relieve pain, enabling you to live a full and active life again. Hip and knee replacements are routine surgical procedures that can vastly improve quality of life.

We offer hip and knee replacements. for people with severe hip or knee pain and loss of mobility. You might need a hip or knee replacement if you have a degenerative condition like osteoarthritis, or other forms of arthritis (including rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis). Or you might have a severe fracture with extensive damage to the joint. These are the most common reasons for needing a hip or knee replacement but there are others, too, such as hip impingement or knee joint deformity.
Normally, patients who undergo joint replacement surgery have already tried less invasive procedures like physiotherapy and painkilling medication. While these treatments are generally effective in the early stages of a condition like osteoarthritis, as the disease becomes more advanced they may not provide sufficient pain relief.
Prior to surgery we will take a full medical history and carry out MRI scans and X-rays to assess the condition of your joint. The surgery is normally performed under general anaesthetic (which means you’ll be asleep throughout) or you may be given an epidural which numbs the lower half of your body. An incision is made above the affected joint and the damaged bone and cartilage is removed and replaced with an artificial implant. After surgery, you will be given a rehabilitation programme, with exercises to strengthen your knee or hip and help you to regain movement and flexibility. We offer optional packages of post-operative support (see below) to assist with your recovery, if required. You may need to take a short course of antibiotics immediately post-surgery to reduce the risk of infection. Recovery times vary but your surgeon will advise you when it is safe to resume everyday activities like working, driving or sport.

Mr Andrade is a consultant orthopaedic hip and knee surgeon with a special interest in young adult hip problems. He pioneered techniques and training programmes, used by other surgeons, in hip preservation surgery and hip and knee joint replacements. He was fellowship trained at Sportsmead-SA in Adelaide, South Australia and later became a visiting fellow in trauma surgery at Hennepin County Medical Centre in Minneapolis, USA.
Mr Dawson-Bowling is a leading orthopaedic consultant with a special interest in knee replacements, knee sports injuries and treating hip conditions. He is recognised for his exemplary work in complex hip joint replacements and revision joint replacement surgery. He is a pioneer in the use of MAKOplasty robotic arm technology for hip replacement surgery and is currently working alongside an international team to develop a new type of hip implant.
