Dental implants are small titanium screws that are fitted directly into your jawbone. They exactly mimic a natural tooth root, and become a solid foundation for a custom-made and incredibly natural-looking replacement tooth. The titanium implant fuses with the surrounding bone over time in a process called osseointegration, fixing your implant strongly and permanently in place.
Whether you need to replace one or multiple missing teeth, dental implants are an innovative and superior restoration. With stable and supported replacements, you can regain the look, feel and function of natural teeth and enjoy eating and speaking with renewed confidence. Let us improve your quality of life with dental implants.
What does the procedure involve?
Consultation
During your dental implant consultation, we examine your teeth and gums and ensure you are suitable for treatment. We take digital x-rays to aid our diagnosis and plan the best places for your implants. If you need additional treatment to prepare for implant surgery, such as a bone graft or sinus lift, we can arrange this.
Implant surgery
Fitting your implant is a relatively short procedure. We use local anaesthetic to minimise your discomfort and ensure your comfort and safety throughout the surgery. We insert the implant into the carefully planned position in your jawbone, often creating a precision-drilled hole for the best outcome. Your implant is screwed into your bone and the wound is stitched up so it can heal effectively.
Healing
It takes around 3-6 months for the implant to fuse to your bone and create a solid and secure foundation. We may fit a temporary bridge or denture to cover the gap and protect your gum during the healing process.
Your new smile
When your implant has fully healed, your replacement tooth is fitted on top. Your crown or bridge is custom-made to your exact specifications, ensuring it blends seamlessly with your existing teeth and gives you a beautiful and complete smile.
We use local anaesthetic during your dental implant surgery, you will won’t feel any pain and will remain comfortable throughout the procedure. Our goal is to ensure you feel safe and reassured at all times. After treatment, you will likely feel some discomfort, but this can be managed with painkillers as advised. Most people find dental implant surgery less painful than having a tooth removed, and are able to return to work the next day.
Dental implants have the potential to last a lifetime if they are cared for properly. They are fitted permanently into your jawbone to become a new and secure tooth root. You need to maintain an excellent brushing and flossing routine at home, look after your general health and make sure you visit your dentist regularly so they can check on your implant. The crown or bridge that the implant supports may need to be replaced over time due to normal wear and tear.
Simply treat your dental implant, and the replacement tooth on top, like it is one of your natural teeth! Brush and floss twice a day to make sure the gum surrounding the implant stays healthy, and visit your dentist for regular check-ups.
Dental implants are incredibly natural-looking, and exactly mimic a natural tooth root. As they are fused with your jawbone, there is no danger of the implant or crown on top moving or slipping. You can talk and eat in public with confidence, and no-one will be able to tell you have a dental implant fitted.
You will most likely find it easier to talk once you have a dental implant fitted! Having a large gap in your teeth can cause issues with speech, but a replacement tooth securely supported by a solid dental implant can improve the way you talk.
The entire dental implant treatment process can be lengthy, as your implant needs time to heal and fuse with your jawbone before your final replacement tooth can be fitted on top. Dental implant surgery is a relatively quick procedure, but healing time can be several months. Your new smile will definitely be worth it in the end!
