Temporomandibular (TMJ) disorder is a condition that affects the function of the TMJ joint, which connects your jaw to your skull. It can cause pain, restricted movement, and clicking or popping sounds when your jaw is moved up and down or side to side. The exact cause of TMJ disorder can vary, but is often based on a variety of factors including trauma, arthritis and bruxism.
Bruxism is the medical term for clenching and grinding the teeth, and you may not even be aware you are doing it until you begin to suffer with painful and debilitating problems. We can help with bespoke treatment for bruxism and TMJ disorders, giving you some much-needed relief.
Consultation
If you are suffering with pain and limited movement in your jaw joint, we see you for an initial consultation to confirm if injectable treatment with Botox is the best course of action for your case. We assess your level of TMJ disorder and explain the procedure in detail. You are also given the opportunity to ask any questions.
Treatment
We use a fine needle to administer muscle-relaxing injections directly into your jaw muscles and potentially other carefully planned areas of your lower face. The treatment helps the tense jaw muscles to relax and eases your pain, but ensures you retain chewing function and your natural facial expressions.
Results
You should start to feel the effects of the treatment straight away, with improved movement and reduced pain. With no downtime or recovery needed, you can return to your normal activities as soon as you leave the clinic.
Please note – for this treatment, Botox® is used for medical reasons to relieve the symptoms associated with TMJ disorder.
The treatment can be very effective for many patients, but it is not a guaranteed solution. Often, it is used in conjunction with other TMJ treatments. We can advise you if the treatment will work for you during your consultation.
After your injectable TMJ treatment, you can return to your normal daily routines. You should remain upright and avoid massaging or rubbing your lower face for several hours to prevent any spreading.
You will likely feel some improvement within a day or two of treatment, but it usually takes several days to fully feel relief from your symptoms.
Botox® treatment for TMJ is covered by most insurance companies, so please check with your insurer. If you wish to pay privately, we can advise you of the expected costs during your consultation.
