Mr Luke Cascarini is a hugely experienced and highly respected specialist surgeon of the mouth, jaw and face (oral and maxillofacial surgery). Deeply committed to innovation, he uses the latest techniques and methods for the benefit of his patients and is one of the few UK surgeons to offer temporomandibular joint (TMJ) replacement and arthroscopic TMJ surgery. An internationally published author and speaker and a member of the European Society of Temporomandibular Joint Surgeons (ESTMJS), he is at the forefront of developments in his area of expertise and aims to develop and refine treatments for TMJ disorders and advanced jaw reconstruction.

About Mr Cascarini

Mr Cascarini is one of the UK’s leading mouth, jaw and face surgeons. He is the only surgeon in the UK offering advanced arthroscopic TMJ disc plication and has also developed arthroscopic procedures with the injection of Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC), a non-surgical treatment that harnesses the natural ability to heal the body.

He has long been an early adopter of innovations in mouth, jaw and facial surgery. He was the first surgeon in the UK to carry out a level III jaw arthroscopy to treat jaw joint disc displacement, which treats a clicking jaw joint, restricted movement and pain, instead of using open surgery and disc fixation. As a result, patients experience fewer complications, less scarring and quicker recovery. He now runs an annual course on this technique in London which attracts an audience of oral and maxillofacial surgeons from across the world.

He is one of the most highly experienced surgeons in temporomandibular joints (TMJ) replacement surgery in the UK, carrying out the majority of these operations performed in the South of England.

In January 2019, Mr Cascarini again broke new ground by performing the UK’s first jawbone replacement using a 3D-printed mandible incorporating a titanium frame. Only five such procedures have been carried out globally to date.

He is also currently the only practitioner to use AMPP/Lipogems® regenerative treatments to treat osteoarthritis in the jaw to avoid surgery and preserve a patient’s own joint.

Further evidence of his commitment to innovation are the new techniques he pioneered on free flap jaw reconstruction for cancer patients. This is a micro-surgical technique which enables large trauma sites in the face and jaw to be repaired. He has a 98% success rate in this treatment, equalling the renowned MD Anderson Cancer Center in Texas.

Mr Cascarini is a regular contributor to academic publications and a renowned lecturer. He is the author of the Oxford Handbook of Oral Maxillofacial Surgery, the leading reference text for junior oral maxillofacial trainees around the world; an editor on Elsevier’s two-volume text book on Maxillofacial Surgery; and co-author of Principles of Surgery: Everything you need to know but were frightened to ask!, which covers the basic principles of modern surgery in a straightforward Q&A format.

He also held the positions of Associate Editor of British Journal Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and was Section Editor of the International Journal of Maxillofacial Surgery, both for over five years. He has been a reviewer for Dental Journal and other medical journals for the last ten years.

Mr Cascarini led registrar training at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Trust until mid-2019, where he remains an honorary consultant.

Having obtained his degree in dental surgery at University of Bristol Dental School in 1995, Mr Cascarini went on to graduate in medicine and surgery at the University of Wales, Cardiff in 2000. He undertook general medical and surgical training at the Royal College of Surgeons of England, where he holds a Fellowship in Dental Surgery, before going on to higher surgical training in oral and maxillofacial surgery in the South Thames region.

Mr Cascarini has long been an early adopter of innovations in mouth, jaw and facial surgery. He was the first in the UK to carry out a level III jaw arthroscopy to treat jaw joint disc displacement, which treats a clicking jaw joint, restricted movement and pain, instead of using open surgery and disc fixation. In January 2019, Mr Cascarini again broke new ground by performing the UK’s first jawbone replacement using a 3D-printed mandible incorporating a titanium frame to allow teeth to be implanted. Only five such procedures have been carried out globally to date. Mr Cascarini is also currently the only practitioner to use AMPP/Lipogems regenerative treatments to treat osteoarthritis in the jaw to avoid surgery and preserve a patient’s own joint.

Further evidence of his commitment to innovation was the tracheostomy dressing he invented in partnership with P3 Medical and the new techniques he pioneered on free flap jaw reconstruction for cancer patients. This involves a micro-surgical technique which enables large trauma sites in the face and jaw to be repaired or the irradiated area in the case of cancer patients. He has a 98% success rate in this treatment, equalling the renowned MD Anderson Cancer Center in Texas.

Mr Cascarini is also highly experienced in TMJ replacement surgery and performs most of them in the South of England. TMJ replacement is a course of treatment for jaw disc derangement, arthritis, injection, gout, although arthritis is the most common reason.

Mr Cascarini is a regular contributor to academic publications and a renowned lecturer. Currently he is honorary consultant at Guy’s and St Thomas’s NHS Trust. In addition, he is the author of the Oxford Handbook of Oral Maxillofacial Surgery, the leading reference text for junior oral maxillofacial trainees around the world; an editor on Elsevier’s two-volume text book on Maxillofacial Surgery; and co-author of Principles of Surgery: Everything you need to know but were frightened to ask!, which covers the basic principles of modern surgery in a straightforward Q&A format.  He has also held the position of Associate Editor British Journal Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and was a reviewer for Dental Journal and other medical journals, and Section Editor of the International Journal of Maxillofacial Surgery.

He also led Registrar training at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Trust until mid-2019 and is currently the head of the head and neck cancer multidisciplinary team for HCA Healthcare at Guy’s and St Thomas’s NHS Trust.

Books

Oxford Handbook of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery

Written by Luke Cascarini, Clare Schilling, Ben Gurney and Peter Brennan at the end of 2011, this book was published in its second edition in 2012.

Designed for easy reading even though this is a technical subject, the Handbook makes good use of bullets, breaking down the information into bite-sized chunks. It provides  real-life advice on dealing with situations in the clinic and in theatre; the ultimate survival guide for OFM surgeons! It also describes drugs and dental materials used in OFMS, as well as detailing the symptoms and signs of disorders that OFM surgeons are likely to meet.Oral and maxillofacial surgery is now included in the core training curriculum for all trainee surgeons so all will need to get this book. It equips doctors with the basics of OFMS, what procedures they need to know, what treatments are used and what emergencies can arise as well as providing everything they will need to know in order to get through presentations and exams.

Principles of Surgery: Everything you need to know but were frightened to ask!

Luke co-authored this book with Sam Andrews. It covers the basic principles of modern surgery in an easy-to-read question and answer format, providing an easily referenced set of notes for surgeons and other health professionals. Assistants in an operating department or surgical practice, nurses, junior doctors, trainee surgeons, medical students, podiatrists, dentists all use it as an accessible reference.

It’s the only book of its kind, covering all the essential basic info that health professionals need to know across many different disciplines. Other books are specialised, focusing on one small aspect of surgery. This covers the lot and answers important questions such as:
