Highly regarded consultant oral and maxillofacial surgeon Mr Ravinder Pabla holds the key post of Clinical Lead for the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. Vastly experienced and an excellent communicator and educator, Mr Pabla puts skilful collaboration with other specialists at the heart of his approach and is devoted to achieving the best possible outcome for his patients.
Mr Ravinder Pabla gained 23 years’ experience before becoming a consultant surgeon, which began with achieving distinctions in both Medicine and Dentistry from St Bartholomew’s and The Royal London School of Medicine and Dentistry, University of London. These degrees, together with subsequent training posts in dentistry, medicine and surgery equipped him with extensive knowledge of maxillofacial surgery, plastic surgery and ENT surgery, which was gained at renowned UK training institutions.
This knowledge was supplemented by specialist training undertaken at Northwick Park Hospital, University College London Hospital, Eastman Dental Institute, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children and the Royal London Hospital. Once he had received his certification of training, Mr Pabla took the opportunity to work with international facial deformity experts on a sought-after fellowship at the Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne in Australia.
Simultaneous to his appointment as a consultant, he took charge as departmental lead for head and neck skin cancer surgery and plays a pivotal role in the formal Skin Cancer Multidisciplinary Team. Overseeing the departmental complaints process, he is dedicated to constantly improving levels of patient satisfaction and raising standards to reduce the likelihood of recurrent problems.
He is an expert in treating the spectrum of disorders that can affect the face, mouth, jaws and neck. This includes managing misplaced, buried or missing teeth; wisdom teeth; mouth and tongue problems; the management of facial disproportion and deformity; surgical management of skin cancer; oral cancer diagnosis; management of jaw cysts and tumours; benign neck lumps; salivary gland disease; and jaw joint disorders. Further to his training at the Royal London Hospital – often considered one of the country’s premier level 1 trauma centres, he is also skilful in treating maxillofacial trauma.
Effective, close collaboration with specialists from other disciplines is key to Mr Pabla’s approach. He regularly partners with head and neck cancer surgeons, oncologists, dermatologists, orthodontists, oculoplastic surgeons and nursing specialists. The aim is to harness the varying expertise of each specialty in the service of maximising each patient’s care and treatment options.
Mr Pabla is dedicated to passing on his knowledge to the next generation of medical professionals and improving the knowledge of current practitioners undertaking advanced training. This is illustrated by the various educational roles he holds: he is an undergraduate examiner at the University of London’s University College London Medical School; a postgraduate examiner at the Royal College of Surgeons of England; and an approved educational supervisor for qualified dentists and doctors receiving further training.
With an impressive array of published articles in peer-reviewed journals and textbook chapters, together with presentations and expert appearances at medical conferences and meetings in the UK and overseas, Mr Pabla’s commitment to research and communication of current best practice is objectively demonstrable.
