Mr Mustansir Alibhai is a compassionate, highly skilled Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon with outstanding expertise and communication skills. He aims to explain diagnosis and treatment options fully as well as dealing with any questions that may arise. His wide training has developed both his generic and specialist surgical skills to a high level and the opportunity to work within diverse teams has honed his interpersonal skills. He puts a high value on teamwork and effective communication, particularly when working within multidisciplinary teams. With qualifications in both medicine and dentistry, he is experienced in both maxillofacial and dentoalveolar, oncology and deformity surgery and has a particular interest in head and neck cancer surgery and reconstruction. He is currently a Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial/Head and Neck Surgeon at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.
Mr Mustansir Alibhai gained a dentistry degree (BDS) from the University of Liverpool in 2001 before achieving his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree with distinctions in clinical sciences and medicine, in 2008 from King’s College London. Following completion of his higher surgical training in London, Mr Alibhai completed a sought-after Head and Neck Surgical Oncology Fellowship, at Queen Victoria Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, East Grinstead, in 2016, which proved to be an invaluable experience, particularly in terms of mastering specialist techniques such as perforator dissection and microvascular reconstruction.
His time spent at Great Ormond Street Hospital, beginning in 2016 as a locum consultant, helped him to understand the challenges of dentoalveolar, oncology and deformity surgery within the paediatric population. After holding locum consultant roles at Bart’s Health and University College London Hospitals NHS trusts, he was appointed substantive consultant at the latter in 2017, becoming associate clinical lead for head and neck surgery in 2019. He was appointed Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS)/Head and Neck Surgery at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Trust In 2020.
His main areas of interest include: cancers of the face, mouth, jaws and neck; microsurgical facial reconstruction; facial trauma; jaw tumours and reconstruction; benign oral lesions; salivary gland tumours and stones; temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain, and oral and dentoalveolar surgery.
His naturally empathetic personality, vast experience and expertise mean that Mr Alibhai has excelled in a number of teaching roles, including Assigned Education Supervisor and Educational Lead in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at University College London Hospitals NHS Trust from 2019-20 and Clinical Supervisor to London Deanery specialist registrars between 2017 and 2020. He is currently Assigned Educational Supervisor in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Guy’s Hospital.
He was honoured with a richly deserved award in 2019 at UCLH for his outstanding care, voted for by his patients. In his spare time, Mr Alibhai enjoys swimming and keeping fit, which he enjoys as a welcome balance to his work life in which he strives to offer every patient the highest standards in head and neck oncology surgery and reconstruction.
