Dr Barbara Carey is a Consultant in Oral Medicine. She completed her undergraduate dental degree at University College Cork and undergraduate medical degree at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland, and has worked in a variety of acute hospital and community dental and medical settings. She obtained her FDS(OM) and FFD(Oral Medicine) of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2018. Having completed her specialty training in London, in 2019, she became substantive consultant in Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.
Barbara Carey became a Consultant in Oral Medicine at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in 2019. She specialises in the diagnosis and management of patients with potentially malignant disorders, lichen planus, oral ulceration, pigmented lesions, dry mouth, oral manifestations of systemic conditions, infections, and orofacial pain. She also works in the oral dermatology service at St John’s Institute of Dermatology managing patients with autoimmune blistering diseases.
She is an active contributor to clinical research and has published over 30 articles in peer reviewed journals and has authored a number of book chapters in oral medicine and dermatology textbooks. Barbara has been an invited speaker in major national and international meetings and conferences.
She is passionate about education, and regularly partakes in the training of oral medicine registrars.
She is honorary treasurer of the British and Irish Society for Oral Medicine and was Region 1 (UK and Ireland) representative of the European Association of Oral Medicine (2018-2023). She is deputy chair of the head and neck cancer MDT.
