About Mr Sebastian Dawson-Bowling

Mr Dawson-Bowling is Head of Orthopaedic Services at Barts Health NHS Trust, where he is responsible for orthopaedic services at The Royal London Hospital, Whipps Cross University Hospital and Newham University Hospital. As part of this role, he is currently engaged in developing a specialist centre of excellence for orthopaedics and in researching the development of accelerated recovery pathways for patients undergoing joint replacement surgery.

His own NHS practice is at The Royal London Hospital, where he treats major trauma patients and those with complex hip and knee problems.

He has particular expertise in hip revision surgery, which involves correcting hip replacements which have failed due to injury, infection or wear and tear, and he regularly treats oversees patients who travel to the UK to benefit from his specialist experience. He is in the process of developing a referral centre aimed specifically at treating patients with these and other complex hip problems.

In his private practice, Mr Dawson-Bowling uses the latest regenerative treatments to reduce pain in patients with arthritic hips or to delay the need for a hip replacement. He is a strong advocate of effective and empathetic communication with patients prior to surgery as being essential to providing the best possible outcome.

Teaching and academia remain an important part of Mr Dawson-Bowling’s working life, and he still teaches medical students on a day-to-day basis. He is Honorary Senior Lecturer for MSc students at Queen Mary University, London and he recently supported a group of medical students to set up the London Undergraduate Orthopaedic Society, for which he is Inaugural Honorary President. He was also awarded the title of Orthopaedic Trainer of the year 2018/19 for the ‘Percivall Pott Rotation’, part of the orthopaedic training for doctors based around the Royal London Hospital and neighbouring NHS Trusts.

After studying at the universities of Cambridge University (where he was also part of the crew which won the Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race) and London and Guy’s and St Thomas’s hospital, he qualified in 2000. Mr Dawson-Bowling obtained his basic and specialist surgical training on the South Thames Orthopaedic Training programme. His extensive experience in orthopaedic surgery includes sub-specialist fellowship training at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore. In 2010 he worked with the eminent knee and hip specialist, Paul Pellicci, MD, at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. Following a year at St. George’s Hospital, London in a consultant orthopaedic surgeon role, he moved into his current position with Barts Health NHS Trust, the UK’s largest teaching hospital trust.

Co-author of 19 peer-reviewed publications and an author/editor of three orthopaedic textbooks as well as having written chapters in professional titles on orthopaedics, trauma and medical law, Mr Dawson-Bowling’s ongoing commitment to learning was evidenced by the Master’s degrees in medical law (Cardiff University) and Orthopaedic Science (Brighton and Sussex Medical School), which he achieved in 2009. His medical law qualification means he can offer medicolegal services and frequently acts as an expert witness in litigation cases for hip surgery patients.

His academic work also includes working on the editorial board for the journal Bone and Joint 360, one of the world’s lead orthopaedic journals, and representing them as a speaker at the British Orthopaedic Association annual international conference. He is also on the editorial board of the National Joint Registry, the organisation which logs all UK hip and knee replacements and monitors the performance of implants, surgeons and hospitals.
