Walking normally, pain free and even back on the golf course 6 weeks after a partial knee replacement with Professor Adrian Wilson.

Adrian was recommended to Julie by her physiotherapist, who had been treating her for her severe knee pain, caused by arthritis. Julie was at a point where she needed to take pain killers to play a round of golf, and walking any distance was extremely painful. The knee was becoming increasingly ‘knock-kneed’, turning inwards, which, as well as the pain, was concerning Julie in terms of what this may do to her knee longer term.

Six weeks on and, so far, I have not been disappointed. I have followed all of the instructions I was given and exercised diligently, but even I have been amazed by the rate of my progress. To the surprise of all my friends, the improvement in my stance and walking is already considerable. I can walk good distances at my old, fairly rapid pace, I am driving once again and, quite surprisingly, I have already played four holes of golf.

Julie had been suffering for arthritis, which was limiting her walking and she needed pain relief to play golf.

Adrian discussed the options with Julie and they agreed that a partial knee replacement offered the optimum solution to get Julie back to playing golf and pain free in the minimum time frame. Julie explains: “As I had every confidence in Prof. Wilson, my expectations were extremely high. I had no doubt that not only would I get back almost full mobility, but also I would return to a full and active life.”

Adrian carried out a lateral partial knee replacement in December 2017. After her operation, Julie stayed in hospital for 3 days, although suffered very little pain. Within 10 days she no longer needed any pain relief, and after a few weeks she was able to walk without her crutches.

After 6 weeks, Julie was already talking about golf, and had even tested her knee on a few holes at her golf club! Julie summarises here experience under Adrian’s care:

“Six weeks on and, so far, I have not been disappointed. With continuing exercise, I am hoping and expecting to be back to normal in a matter of a few more weeks.

Although early days, it appears that my operation has been a great success. I would certainly return to Prof. Wilson without hesitation, if the need arises in the future. Based on my own experience, I would recommend unreservedly Prof. Wilson and his team. For me, they did a great job.”

Adrian was delighted that Julie has done so well and said during their six week post-operative appointment: “She walked with a normal gait today, and had full movement and no swelling. She is a great example of how well patients can do after knee replacement surgery.”
